Jim Knoblach's state budget bill was the only major finance bill that became law this year. Click here for Rep. Knoblach's look at what happened in 2016.

Dear Neighbor,

I was pleased to successfully author this year’s budget bill at the Legislature. It passed in both the House and Senate by wide bipartisan margins and was signed by the Governor.

My budget bill was the only one of the four major finance bills that passed and became law in regular session.

It had a lot of great things for the Saint Cloud area, including additional funding for District #742, elimination of the state income tax on military retirement pay, increased funding for the disabled and blind in our community, increased funding to combat sex trafficking, and funding for the Saint Cloud Human Rights office, among others.

Unfortunately the Governor vetoed this year’s tax bill, despite it passing the House by 123-10. This bill, which I supported, contained a tax credit to help pay off student loans, tax relief for farmers and small business owners, and an increase in the tax credit for working families, among other benefits.

We also passed a bonding bill out of the House with roughly $40 million of funding for our area, but the Senate failed to pass this bill. We did pass the largest transportation bill ever in 2015. However, additional transportation funding we passed in the House failed to pass in the Senate on the last night of session. It is possible the Governor may call a special session to deal with these issues.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your representative. It is an honor to represent you and our area in Saint Paul. Please contact me whenever you have thoughts, questions, or concerns.
